I've tried different clients for remote control. I need to control a windows desktop/linux laptop, even while some one else is logged on. With Linux, VNC or X-Win32 allows me to do this. Just ssh in, run vncserver to start a new X server, and then connect to it with VNC. Using VNC with windows is another story. The user that is running the VNC server has to be logged on for me to VNC in, and even then another user cannot use the machine at the same time. Even with the RDC client that comes bundled with Slackware doesn't allow me to connect to my windows machine without logging off whoever is logged on.

Run VNC as a service and it'll work.

Not sure what you mean about controlling the machine while someone is logged on. If you run VNC as a service, you can take control of the machine whenever you like. If you want to get your own desktop, you're looking at terminal services. Skywing has been hacking in that :)

Apparently Windows 2003's Terminal Services can let you use the computer while somebody else is.
I mean if person A is sitting at this computer using it, person B can use an RDC client to connect to this computer and also use it.

The same goes with NT4 TSE and Win2K Server.
But not XP? That is retarded. Fast user switching is implemented in terms of terminal server sessions anyway, would it be so troublesome to go one step further and allow me to connect to my session remotely?

Not at all. It'd just be neat, and so they will squeeze some more money out of you if you want to have that feature.

The reasoning is licensing and use.  Companies could get away with using XP as a server, get out of the CAL program, and just pay the cash for one installation of XP and have a perfect, small-scale application server.

Stupid commercial software :)

My friend said he installed Terminal Servies from 2003 onto xp.  He didn't say if it worked, though.

I HAVE HEARD RUMORS OF SIMILAR INSTALLATIONS ALTHOUGH I HAVEN'T MYSELF WITNESSED ONE.

It might require some improvisation, but check out this article:

This article describes how to install Internet Information Services from Windows XP Professional on a Windows XP Home Edition machine.  I've done it once -- it is involved -- but you should be able to adapt the Terminal Services installer from the Server 2003 disks.

Days later and I still haven't tried it.  I thought I had downloaded it, but unfortunately I only downloaded the help library.

When I get less lazy I'll pull out a w2k3 cd and give it a shot...
