jigsaw | Ah, now that I got this damn Package manager working... what are some apps / progs that a linux user can't live without, list some cool stuff whether it;s desktop enhancement or just programs. | September 23, 2004, 3:08 AM |
Newby | If you don't already have "The GIMP", "Gaim", "Firefox", or "Thunderbird", I suggest you get 'em all. (I realize half of those are probably not on the package manager, but they're still leet) And that AMOR (Amusing Waste of Resources) is indeed amusing. :) | September 23, 2004, 3:14 AM |
peofeoknight | I prefer to use konqueror when I am on linux just because it has built in spell checking. Fire fox is my browser of choice on windows. Wine sucks but I suggest you get it. | September 23, 2004, 1:21 PM |
crashtestdummy | All of those are probably already on his computer. And it's not that hard to get an extension for firefox that checks spelling. | September 23, 2004, 4:21 PM |

I couldn't figure out why in the world words were being underlined! :P | September 23, 2004, 11:53 PM |

crashtestdummy | And why does W.I.N.E. suck? | September 24, 2004, 2:29 AM |
St0rm.iD | Because it's slow and barely ever works. Plus it's ugly. | September 24, 2004, 2:31 AM |
yeah, half the crap I try to run with it gives me an error message. You can never game from it because of the lag, etc. | September 24, 2004, 3:16 AM |
crashtestdummy | I've never had any problems with it but I've never really tried to run anything big from it. | September 24, 2004, 3:43 AM |
iago | What do you mean it's ugly? It looks the exact same as windows 2000!! I once posted some screenshots to prove that point, but I don't know where they are.. | September 24, 2004, 12:02 PM |
crashtestdummy | And if you have SuSE pro I can't really think of anything you could need that didn't come with the install unless you just did a default install. | September 24, 2004, 2:38 PM |
iago | If he did a default install, the first thing I recommend is "gcc". | September 24, 2004, 4:30 PM |
crashtestdummy | gcc is in the default install of SuSE pro. Personal is the one that doesn't have shit. | September 24, 2004, 4:42 PM |
jigsaw | What makes SuSE professional better than personal - havent really read about the differences. | September 25, 2004, 6:49 PM |
crashtestdummy | Personal is missing a lot of items because of licensing issues. That's why it cost a little bit to get the SuSE pro disc or you can do a FTP install. If you have personal and would like Pro I can point you to a good tutorial I found on installing it by FTP. It only took me an hour to do a full install by FTP. | September 25, 2004, 9:08 PM |
GTK, one of the common toolkits, has a crappy refresh rate, crappy repaint handling, and is all around slow at drawing. Qt is encumbered by licensing issues and is also slow as hell and has a crappy refresh rate (but it's repaint handling is better). Not to mention that almost all Linux apps are horribly not polished. They often resize the window without resizing components, not lined up correctly, and are loaded with spelling errors. | September 25, 2004, 9:14 PM |

St0rm.iD | K anything is not polished (KOffice, KDE configurer) OpenOffice is slow AbiWord is not polished Gaim screwed up my buddy list too. | September 27, 2004, 7:04 PM |

mynameistmp | What I meant was, how is "K anything" not polished ? How is AbiWord not polished ? Which applications are loaded with spelling errors, which ones don't resize components, and which ones don't "line up correctly" ? Also, have you ever compared the benchmarks for OpenOffice with other Office suites ? Or have you ever benchmarked it yourself ? Or are you just guessing ? Gut instinct ? I didn't know it was slow, and I'd be thankful if you could enlighten me. I also wouldn't mind knowing where you're getting your information about GTK's crappy refresh rate, crappy repaint handling, and over all slowness at drawing. | September 28, 2004, 7:41 AM |
