1. I signed up for the free iPod deal at freeipods.com at was immediately put on the "You need email trying to sell you our crap" list.
2. Gmail does a pretty damn good job of filtering spam. So far only one of these has made it into my inbox.

My friend tried that. Turns out he never got his iPod.

I believe gmail has this option for the users if something is spam you can report the email address, and from the point on that address will be blocked.
