aznjunno | When I log on b.net and play starcraft, my computer shuts down on me in the middle of it. I never got to play more than 3 games straight without having my computer shut off on me. It does it almost everytime i try to play. Does anybody know whats causing this and how to fix this problem? | June 27, 2004, 8:26 PM |
deth | could possibly be spyware, first scan your pc with Adaware, spybot search and destroy and norton antivirus. see if that helps. | June 27, 2004, 8:30 PM |
crashtestdummy | Is your computer only shutting off when you run starcraft? Is it a copy of starcraft from the store or did you download it? And is your computer shutting off or just locking up? | June 27, 2004, 8:35 PM |
aznjunno | My computer shuts off mostly when im playing starcraft.. but i think it shuts off when im using a lot of memory on the computer. And when i run spybot, this spyware named DSO Exploit.. But when i delete that spyware from spybot.. It keeps on coming back.. | June 27, 2004, 8:50 PM |
iago | I think DSO Exploit comes from IE, get a real browser. Besides that, which OS are you running? It's ME, then upgrade time. | June 27, 2004, 9:14 PM |
j0k3r | Could be powersupply. Does this happen with other games? How about when your computer works hard for awhile? | June 27, 2004, 9:21 PM |
deth | if spybot can't fix it then you use this: http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html load program, before anything else: go to config and check "back up before fix" then scan, save log and find files that are suspecious. there are hundreds of thousands of forums that help against spyware software, just take the suspecious file and put it in google search, the name of it, example: "R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank" and follow their steps. if anything goes wrong and you "fixed" it with hijack, you can go to config and click restore and it will restore whatever it did. if you can't get any help at all then its time for the ultimate mr fix it: format c: :P | June 27, 2004, 9:44 PM |

aznjunno | i got 480mb of RAM and I have already formatted using System Recovery CD because I had this problem... and yet it doesnt seem to have fixed the problem. | June 28, 2004, 2:17 AM |
crashtestdummy | And still you don't list your operating system. | June 28, 2004, 2:52 AM |
Eli_1 | My friend has this exact same problem with Starcraft and D2 (is that you Jeremy/Josh? :P). I think the power supply would be to blame as he has a pretty old computer, also. And to the people requesting the operating system -- I play Starcraft/Brood War, Diablo2 LOD and Counter-Strike on both Win 95 and Win ME, so I doubt that would cause the problem. | June 28, 2004, 3:05 AM |
crashtestdummy | If he's on xp or 2000 he may have a virus or worm. I think it's blaster that makes your computer shut off. May be a couple of thers too though. | June 28, 2004, 3:14 AM |

crashtestdummy | I have 384 :) Go figure. | June 28, 2004, 3:49 AM |
LW-Falcon | If you have 480 then its not a RAM issue, I have 384 and it runs perfectly. I think its the power supply. | June 28, 2004, 3:57 AM |
Hitmen | Yea, starcraft takes up ~20MB of RAM, it's not going to be a problem on any computer built after 1995. | June 28, 2004, 4:43 AM |

Problem was the fan in my power supply was shot and i had to replace it, so i did and everything is now in working order on that computer. if that's the problem. warning let your computer cool down for awhile befor attempting a fan replacement in the power supply, and be sure you unplug it lol. edit: system was an HP Pavilion. HP is knowen for poor computer construction. | June 28, 2004, 4:54 AM |

Personally I would never open up a psu, even if to replace a fan. I would just get a new one... opening a psu is asking for trouble. | June 28, 2004, 5:52 AM |

But then again if the wires are discolored and the psu itself has the smell of burnt plastic Or the inside walls are black then there are no choices but to buy a new one. | June 28, 2004, 8:13 AM |

crashtestdummy | It's impossible unless it will only recognize 480 mb of the ram. I have well over 384 but that's all it recognizes. I may be wrong and if I am someone tell me how to fix mine. | June 28, 2004, 8:15 AM |

The-Rabid-Lord | I am having the same problem with warcraft 3. I have 380mb of ram. 2000+ AMD Athlon. Im going to virus scan in a second. Update: Are you using Starcraft in Windowed Mode. If you are try it without. It worked for my warcraft problem, so far. | June 28, 2004, 8:35 AM |

aznjunno | i got xp.. so what should i do about the power supply...? is it most likely the fan thats the problem? cuz i think my computer does shut off whenever the back of the computer is hot.. and it gets hot whenever playing a game i guess.. | June 28, 2004, 3:09 PM |

[/quote] Replacing a power supply is pretty easy, if that's what has to be done. It might just need more ventilation, at work and at my dad's they keep their computer in drawers, and that causes them to overheat, but don't try to explain that to them. Open it up and make sure all the fans are working, first of all. | June 28, 2004, 3:27 PM |

crashtestdummy | I'd start the computer in safe mode and run an updated virus scan. To start in safemode reboot and press f8 | June 28, 2004, 5:58 PM |
deth | before going hardware trying putting effort into what i said and rule out software. | June 28, 2004, 6:17 PM |
aznjunno | My computer is Sony Vaio... it seems that i cant open the computer by myself.. or i just cant get it to open... its got no screws and the cover just doesnt slide.. and even if i did get it to open.. i dont know a damn thing about computers so i wouldn't know whats what and what to look for.. | June 28, 2004, 11:31 PM |
j0k3r | My final recommendation... Reformat, if it still happens go back to the company you bought it from. You should have it under warranty, describe what happens to them, and they should be able to find out what's wrong. If it's not under warranty, you've just learned a valuable lesson for the next computer you purchase. I'm sure somebody can tell you how to replace a powersupply. | June 28, 2004, 11:34 PM |

aznjunno | i mean what kind of power supply should i get? | June 29, 2004, 12:11 AM |
j0k3r | Go to bestbuy or similar store, tell them your problem, I'd recommend over 400watts. | June 29, 2004, 12:23 AM |
crashtestdummy | Mail it to me and I'll take care of it ;D | June 29, 2004, 12:28 AM |
iago | I'd recommend taking your entire tower to the nearest computer repair store and explaining the problem to them. They will definately more help than us, since they have the means to physically test it. | June 29, 2004, 12:40 AM |
