The following document is an FAQ on the proposed release. Summary Section What Windows XP Reloaded is not... Windows XP Reloaded is not intended to be new version of Windows XP, nor is it intended to be supplied either through resellers or as an FPP product. Q: What is Windows XP Reloaded? A: Windows XP Reloaded is the codename for new enhancements for the existing version of Windows XP (Home/Pro/Media Center). Q: What will be new in Windows XP? A: In the near future, Windows XP will be sold with Service Pack 2 integrated, as well as a new version of Windows Media Player and an update of Direct X. Basically, this means updated security, better performance for 3D multimedia applications and games, improved support for portable MP3 devices and new integrated features for the online music market. Q: When will Windows XP Reloaded be a reality? A: No specific date is available yet. Availability is targeted mid-summer 2004. Q: Is Windows XP Reloaded a new or "second edition" version of Windows XP? A: No. 'Windows XP Reloaded' has been the informal phrase used for internal discussion around ways to continue to add value to the current Windows XP platform. It does not refer to a specific product, but rather the exploration of a variety of options for delivering value to customers around Windows. Q: Is Longhorn slipping? If resources are diverted away from Longhorn to Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Reloaded, will it push Longhorn out? A: Longhorn development is a top priority. It has dedicated resources who are passionate about delivering a compelling product. They are doing great work and are on track to deliver a beta by the end of the year. Work on Service Pack 2 and other continuous innovation around Windows will have no impact on the dedicated Longhorn resources. Q: Is Windows XP Reloaded a response to increased competition from Linux? A: No. Microsoft has a long history of continuous improvement of the Windows platform. And we have are always evaluating ways to continue to add value and deliver valuable enhancements to our customers. Q: Jim Allchin said Microsoft did not do a good enough job marketing Windows XP. How do you respond? A: Windows XP is a great product and we, like Jim, want as many people as possible to enjoy its benefits. We're always going to feel we can do more to spotlight the continued innovation on the Windows platform. With that said, Windows XP is the fastest selling version of Windows, with more than 130 million copies sold as of September 2003. Q: If Reloaded results in new XP features, how will Microsoft release those new features? A: Not all new features are known yet. All new features will be made available at least through the Microsoft website. Q: How does reloaded relate to XP SP2? A: With Windows XP SP2, we're introducing several new capabilities to Windows XP in an effort to improve the platform and make it more secure. Beyond SP2, we are examining a number of ways to build on the service pack and add further value to the platform. | June 16, 2004, 4:07 PM |

Yoni | What's with companies sticking Reloaded at the end of their titles? It's not witty if it's overused. | June 16, 2004, 5:59 PM |
