I don't know much about web development, so if you need to ask me a question about the website, talk to me like I'm a 12 year old.

My friend gave me a sub-domain so I could upload some pics/songs/ect... to it. I'm trying to finally fix my avatar issue by uploading it there.

However, for some reason, I can't view the file due to an error 403 (forbidden!).
Click here to see what error I'm talking about

[Edit]
Fyi, it's running Apache/1.3.29 Server.

file permissions or directory security issue. You will need some access to the server to resolve it. Tell him to fix it because obviously you can't. Try to cop some remote desktop access out of him and we can tell you how to change the settings (I am assumeing it is a windows server obviously).

If it's linux server, check out man chmod. If it's a windows server... uh... *slowly backs away*

If it's unixish, the following command in a shell should work nicely...
chmod a+r test.gif

If its a windows server, run IIS Manager, right click on the website, and run the permissions wizard. Follow the prompts, choosing appropriately for your situation.

The site says it is running Apache, not IIS, so what good would running the IIS Manager do?

Do try to keep up! My response was to the person who said "if its windows", and thus my reply began with "If its a windows server".

You have an ambiguous sentence, the "it" refers to Eli's server in the context of this thread, and it is not running IIS. Perhaps you should have quoted the post so your response didn't look like it came out of nowhere?

Also, the post was "if its a windows server I can walk you through it." Why give directions to someone if they can walk people through it?

Thanks for playing grok, maybe next time!

Ah, you question my motivation, not my accuracy. I appreciate you conceding the argument in the face of such obvious rightness. :)

I think this is the part where you mail him and 8 x 10 autographed photo of yourself. He will need it for the shrine.

If its a windows server then you will need to right click the file to set the permissions on it and do the directory sevurity, requrdless of iis or apache. Make sure simple share on xp is turned off or you will not have a security tab when you right click the file and go to properties.

I think your answer was actually off the topic, since it replied to a post regarding Apache on Windows. Original poster asks about configuring Apache, second poster says he knows how to configure Apache on Windows, then you fill in something about IIS on Windows? But then, topics typically go off-topic here on this forum, like this post does...

True that!. Besides, even the topic is off-topic. Is this a server administration forum? NOT!

They keep restricting things that make noise here, like airport starts and landings and fly-overs. Wonder if the space shuttle will ever get "Permission Denied!"...

It's nice. It's been around 70-80 F and sunny the last couple of days.
