Just wondering.

Throw away the bit of food with the hair. I also adhere to the 5 second rule
of food falling on the floor.

I don't have a collection (yet), so I just pull it out and carry on. Although it really depends whose hair it is.

Question to Thing - What if it's soup or some other liquid food where you can't remove part?

If it's chicken or beef soup, that's what a dog is for.

Iago, if it's in my soup I'll just pull it out and save it to floss with later.

Throw away the bit of food where the hair was found. Depending on the color and what kind of hair it was.

Hmm, where's the option "ignore the hair, close eyes, and continue eating"?

Throw away all the food on your plate - because that's just the way I am, I also hate leftovers and seafood :)

Im really awkward with what I eat. If theres a hair in it ill complain to who made it and then go make some more food while my dog(oscar) gets the other food.

I don't understand that one, do people think it takes germs exactly 5 seconds to walk over to the food and make it "dirty"? If my cookie fell on the floor for 1 second, I wouldn't think it would be any different from it falling on the floor for an hour...

[edit]No Iago, I don't mean it actually falling for an hour, I mean it falling and then lying on the floor for one hour[/edit]

Allow me to explain, jok3r.

Studies have shown that it takes 5 seconds for food to be contaminated after falling on the floor. The primary contaminant is known as the Texas Jumping Germ. Once a bit of food falls on the floor, the germ must realize the food has fallen, properly locate the food in relation to it's position and launch itself onto the food. This process takes exactly 5 seconds. In case you are wondering, all TJGs that are within a 5 millimeter radius of the impact area are crushed to death and cannot contaminate the food.

You are welcome.

I hadn't thought of that before. But it needs one constraint: it can't be green. Either because it's green beans (ugh) or rotten.

For one hour I think there's a difference. Dust drifting around on the floor is more likely to have gotten stuck on it after one hour than after 1 second.

It depends on who dare put their hair in my soup. If it's my hair I could care less, just remove it and continue. However, in seventh grade the lunch lady got hair in my pizza so I complained and got a new slice. :)

Some germs live in the particles drifting around in the currents down on floor level.

Another reason you may pick up and eat something that's been left on the floor only briefly is that you've kept an eye on it for the entire time, and know that the dog hasn't been licking it yet.

[/quote]

What if you have the following timeline:
0s: The food was dropped.
0.3s: The food hit the floor.
1.6s: Due to natural instinct for falling food, your dog has run over and licked it a couple times.
2.3s: You try to kick the dog to get him off your food and end up stepping on the food yourself.
3.4s: You swear to yourself.
4.0s: You bend over to pick it up.
4.9s: You pick up the food.

Clearly, you wouldn't want to eat it in this case. But it DOES conform to the 5-second rule. Therefore, the rule is invalid.

But it's true what Adron said, germs live on dust/grime, so I would be worried about both. But eating a crunchy piece of apple is never plesent.

Since the dog slobbered all over it, at 4.9 s your pickup attempt fails and it slips away.... ;)

But it might not!!

And if you try picking it up, it seperates from the floor, then falls back, does the timer restart, or are the germs already ready? And what if it slips and lants 2 feet away? You can assume that the germs that were there had all run over to the original location, so the new place should be safe for at least 10 seconds!

From what I understand Dogs have one of the most, if not the most, cleanliest mouths on the planet. That is why it can be beneficial for your dog to lick your wounds (if you don't have access to medical supplies that is). I think it would have to depend on how slobbered the food is. He could have killed any present germs for you. :D

hmm, my logic:

A: dogs lick their butt && dogs have poo on their butt = dogs have poo on their toungue

B: A && dogs use their tounge to lick your food = dogs get poo on your food

C: I wouldn't eat poo && B = I wouldn't eat food licked by a dog.

therefore, if you would eat food licked by a dog, you would eat poo.

Either way the poop made contact with the plant, and eventually made contact with your mouth. I am assuming by using sublimation you mean the poop is purified? In that case I see no difference than the mouth of a dog. Like I said before a dog’s mouth is able to rid wounds of bacteria. I am sure by licking its butt, it is just cleaning himself of the bacteria found in the poop. So I don't see the big deal about his slobber.

I am not saying I would eat anything that had slime dripping from it; I just don't think there is anything wrong with a little bit of dog saliva.
