My firends computer shows this error when teh ocmputer is turned on:

It sounds like he is having a harddrive problem. Run scandisk, and if that find nothing, reinstall win98. Or tell him to get 2k/xp :)

I recommend an electro-magnet.

Can you get into MS-DOS mode? If not, you'll need to use another computer to create an MS-DOS boot disk and copy command.com from the boot disk to the Windows directory.

Edit: To get into MS-DOS mode, reboot the computer. When it says "Starting Windows 98...", press the F8 key and choose "Reboot in MS-DOS mode". (It's not on the screen for very long, so be ready. :))

Can I do that with win Xp Pro?

No. Windows XP has no MSDOS component. You have to use a Windows 9x line system.

For win2000 (and presumably in XP as well, as this is actually a good feature), you could use the Recovery Console to get a DOS-like environment. It's not really DOS, but it's a command line environment that seems to be mostly independent of the main OS install, so you can still access it after screwing up the OS configuration thoroughly. :)

I doubt you could get a command.com matching the one needed for Win98 from the recovery console though...

Yes. You will need to go to a website such as http://www.bootdisk.com or do some Google searching to find a boot disk compatible with her exact version of Windows 98, then use your computer to write the image to a floppy.

Agreed. I was addressing Outlaw's question from the context of whether WinXP could be booted into a command line mode for repair purposes. :P [which a subsequent reading shows isn't what he really wanted to know]

The target computer is a Windows 98 box. While XP's recovery systems are for XP only, bootdisk images are available for download that are compatible with nearly every version of Windows -- all you need is a functional computer to write them, independent of the functional computer's OS. Once you get into MS-DOS mode successfully on the target computer, you can do whatever you need using floppy disks, including potentially copying command.com off of another functional Windows 98 box to overwrite the corrupted file. :)

wouldnt that file be on the origianl win98 disk?
i remeber having that problem and just getting the file off of the win 98 disk, but its been a while since i messed with 98

Yes, it probably is; but either way you need DOS access on the target machine.
