Thing | So you think you got a badass desktop with the cooolest window decor and icon set? Prove it! Post a link to your screenshot and show us what a badass you really are. Don't embed your image with your post or I'll just delete it. The winner will receive a fabulous prize which is TBA. | January 8, 2004, 10:37 PM |
Spht | http://www.valhallalegends.com/spht/images.asp?filename=desktop_new.gif I slightly modified a desktop icon or two. | January 8, 2004, 11:09 PM |
iago | http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/ss.jpg - linux http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/windows.png - windows (note, however, that my Linux desktop has a rotating wallpaper with about 20 different ones. Most of them involve penguins, some involve Cthulhu.) Also notice the little AMoR penguin on the active window? :D | January 8, 2004, 11:37 PM |

Spht | People who promote Linux by putting wallpapers which insult Windows on a Windows system suck! Hostile -- Only took a minute or so to download. Adron -- I'm going to name my Recycle Bin Papperskorgen! As a side note, you should disable your wallpaper when you're taking screen shot of your desktop. A screenshot with no wallpaper should be saved as PNG or GIF, and one with a wallpaper should be saved as well-compressed JPEG. Edit: Also, people need to use My Documents as a dumping grounds for random things. Your desktop should always be clean! | January 9, 2004, 5:07 PM |
iago | I think that wallpapers are very important to the desktop and should be preserved :P And that background wasn't really meant to be anti-windows, but I wanted a linux penguin and that was the first/cutest one I found. The fact that it says anti-windows is just a side-effect :P And I don't use my documents for a dumping ground for random things, I use the recycling bin. Anything worth keeping can go in my quicklaunch-ish bars, and anything else is garbage. | January 9, 2004, 5:21 PM |
Skywing | An empty desktop is a good desktop. I never see mine, there's always some fullscreen window blocking it. I think there might be one or two icons on it, though... | January 9, 2004, 6:03 PM |
Soul Taker | http://holyknights.xepher.net/soul/SoulDesk.jpg - reduced quality a bit to make it 300kB rather than 700. Oh and yea, no icons should be on a desktop, uuuugly. | January 9, 2004, 7:53 PM |
Yes, but it's (usually) more convenient to put things in the start menu than the desktop. Besides, winkey-d and show desktop typically screw up the order of windows when restoring them, which is fairly annoying when you have lots of things open. | January 9, 2004, 10:39 PM |
Thing | I am so used to running 4 desktops that I would find it difficult to be restrained to only one. I use #4 for running a variety of monitoring software which stay open all the time. I use #3 for downloads. I might initiate a download in #1 or #2 but a quick clickety click and I can send that window to #3 and get it out of my way. #2 and #1 I use for regular stuff and I switch easily between the two. I like to have an interesting wallpaper because I run my terminals with transparency. It's nice having a pretty face looking at me from behind the windows. :P [edit] XMMS is set to run on all desktops. :) | January 9, 2004, 11:25 PM |

And I agree, if I'm working on code/homework I like to have the extra desktops to quickly switch between reference materials and work and other stuff (chat windows, for example). Hitmen | Personally I tend to dump everything on my desktop. And I hate the taskbar, being at the default size is still way too big/annoying. | January 10, 2004, 5:07 AM |
zorm | http://zorm.darkexile.com/zormdesktop.png Normally only see my desktop when I first get on for the day and when I get off. Desktop background changes every couple weeks mostly with pictures from rednova.com. | January 10, 2004, 10:36 AM |

But I've learned to dump random things very neatly, makes them easier to spot later. http://yoni.valhallalegends.com/stuff/MyDocuments.png My Documents is conveniently located in C:\Misc. (I am very prejudiced against C:\Documents and Settings - it is a good idea, but very horribly implemented. What's the idea of putting not only spaces, but even multiple spaces, in directory names?! Why didn't they just learn from *nix and name it /home?!)
Oh and yea, no icons should be on a desktop, uuuugly. I set mine recently (more recently than the screenshot linked in this post) to a height of 3 instead of 2, where 1 height unit is for the Desktop quiclaunch bar and 2 height units are for the tasks. I like it this way so far, it's not obstructive at all (with a 1280x1024 resolution...). | January 10, 2004, 1:54 PM |
Hitmen | Maybe if I set the resolution higher I wouldn't mind as much, But 1024x768 works for me so far. [edit] Yea, at 1280x1024 I wouldn't mind the size at all. But then again a cheap crappy monitor looks horrible at 1280x1024 so I'm not going to keep it. | January 10, 2004, 8:03 PM |
Hostile | ya skys desktop is super boring. I mean I don't prefere to make mine half as sexy as I could (like Soul Takers, which is nice btw :p) but I like something there, and the second and third that blizzard made for wow wallpapers I like the most. Other then that I just use normal('Classic') windows theme and other standard icons to what I feel is a good balance between pleasant and productive. | January 12, 2004, 11:02 PM |

That's an interesting way of doing things, but that's what shortcuts are for. | June 18, 2004, 2:08 AM |

I usually close programs when I'm finished with them, instead of wondering if I'll need them again in a couple hours. He didn't have the types of things you have open though (component services, computer management, policy editor, performance viewer, services, telnet server administration, ...????). Again, there ARE shortcuts. I'm curious as to why you have Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and QuickTime installed. I just use Windows Media Player. And you also have Internet Explorer and FireFox... I like how you have one of everything opened though. I think you're trying to take the viewer's attention away from the bad quality wallpaper by having lots of random icons on the task bar. | June 18, 2004, 2:26 AM |

iago | Just another commend on WindowMaker -- I the start menu-ish thing it has. I right click on the background, or on the edge of the screen, and I get a list of the programs I specify. It's also fairly easy to edit WMRootMenu to put the programs I like there: http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/programs.jpg <edit> if the site is still napping, try http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~umbowes1/programs.jpg I enjoy organization -- if I have 40 programs open, I could never find the one I need at the time. I try to keep <10 open at once, and generally have them equally distributed between 4 desktops, grouped by what logically goes together (like, a man-page in a console beside a window where I'm programming). | June 18, 2004, 8:39 AM |
You got my job reversed. WE'RE the ones that get pissed off when an "incident" occurs. But we have to test our own servers, too. We just got a new IPS, so on Monday we get to set up an unpatched box behind it and throw everything we can at it (manually, with Nessus, and with Appscan). It'll be a fun day for sure! The dockapps on the right are, from the bottom: Clock/Calendar Xmms remote control Wireless link strength Uptime Cpu/Network/Ram/Pagefile/Battery/etc. | November 12, 2004, 12:17 AM |
hismajesty | I like your background iago. I haven't been on Linux in ages, whenever I get on it I can never think of anything to do that I couldn't do on Windows. Though, the most of what I do consists of just browsing the internet and playing games. Anyway, since the election is over I (reluctantly) changed my wallpaper. | November 12, 2004, 1:29 AM |
I tried that clipboard one, and totally hated it. Your calendard looks cooler than mine, though! :(! We should compare Snort logs. I get hit by the same annoying http exploit CONSTANTLY. And it's an overflow for WebDAV, so it's very long and takes up a lot of room in Apache's logs :( | November 28, 2004, 6:16 AM |
Thing | That clipboard icon is just one I picked for gedit. I like your audio player thing, what's that all about? Also, I have kept myself firewalled for too long and miss the abuse of Winders machines on the Verizon network. Just this weekend I turned off the firewall and installed Snort so I don't have a lot of data yet. I might even run it with MySQL and ACID like I used to. It makes pretty pages to look at. :) | November 28, 2004, 6:02 PM |

Starting from the third icon, this is what I have: allin1 -- Cpu, ram, network, battery, etc. monitor. I'd like to write it so I can use it remotely to see my server(s)'s info. wmupmon -- Ugly uptime monitor, comes in lots of colors wmclock -- duh wmmultipop3 -- very handy wmwifi -- programmed crappily, I'm going to rewrite this And the bottom one is just a gaim conversation window, miniturized or iconified or whatever they call it. Your gedit icon looks exactly like wmclipboard. Basically, whenever I highlighted it something, it would pull it to its own clipboard buffer and cancel the highlight. You could then click on it, and paste the text it grabbed. The thing I didn't like was how it unhighlighted it. I should have checked if there was a switch to turn it off before I removed it. <edit> just to stay on topic: http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/linux11.jpg http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/linux12.jpg -- Thunderbird is soo sexy. iago | I am trying out some new dockapps in a pilot stage: http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/linux15.jpg The first ons is a handy dandy calculator. I was hoping for one that was just like a pocket calculator, where I could just click the buttons, and it woudl show up on a little screen. One of those DOES exist, but the original site it was on is dead, and I'm not seeing any mirrors. But this one lets me right-click, and it brings up a little window where I can do calculations, and it saves them there. It's not bad, it can do hex and octal too, and apparently some functions. Then I have one that just displays my workspaces. It also has bubble-help things so I can see the name when I mouseover. I'm so used to control-alt-left and right, I dont' think I'll ever use this much. But we'll see. Third, I have a mounter majigger. It lets me mount/umount/eject my cdrom drive with one *clickety*. It also shows me the space remaining on my mounts, if I go left and right. Optionally, it changes it automatically every couple seconds, but I don't hold with that. I might try it out later, though :) | December 4, 2004, 7:32 PM |
