Mitosis | Since I just recently updated my graphics card, my computer has been suddenly shuting off for some reason and restarting. I will be in the middle of something and then it would restart. If anyone could help me fix this, that would be great. Thanks for any advice. | January 3, 2004, 4:58 PM |
iago | Sounds like a heat problem. In your BIOS, does it list your CPU temperature? If it does, check it immediately after a restart, and see if it's high. Or just post it here and ask if it's high. | January 3, 2004, 4:59 PM |
Skywing | It could also be poorly written drivers (think nVIDIA). It might be worth checking the eventlog for bugcheck/save dump entries. | January 3, 2004, 6:10 PM |
Raven | I think he uses an ATI graphics card. I guess it could be your drivers. When the computer shuts down or restarts, does it make any unusual noises? | January 3, 2004, 11:30 PM |
j0k3r | After reading this post, I went and grabbed the drivers off the site, and so far it's working perfectly for me. | January 4, 2004, 12:09 AM |

Stealth | Is the card physically EXTREMELY hot to the touch? (Graphics cards can get pretty hot, but if it's searing there's a problem) Check to make sure that the card is properly seated in its slot as well. This definitely sounds like an overheating problem. | January 4, 2004, 8:46 AM |
iago | Mine used to get extremely hot to the touch. In fact, the back of it turned brown from being burnt, and the picture was always distorted. After I noticed, I pulled it out and it's been fine since (sitting in a drawer) | January 4, 2004, 9:53 AM |
Mitosis | I havent looked inside my case yet, trying to prevent myself from screwing it up. I havent had any problems with it this morning, I put all my games graphics adjustments to low. | January 4, 2004, 2:16 PM |
Raven | Instead of asking us, or along with asking us, you should definitely contact your vidcard's manufacturer. I think their specialists should be able to help you out more effectively than we can. :) | January 5, 2004, 5:44 AM |
MesiaH | I have an nvidea gforce 2 64 mb card, and i was having the same problems, howerver, it was also working with another large contribution, a small power supply. Since i had upgraded my ram to 640mbs ddr, i had to go buy a 400 watt atx power supply, and have never had a problem since. Also, there are many many critical updates for drivers and other dependencies for nvidea | January 5, 2004, 8:36 AM |
