I just read that Tycho Brahe got his nose cut, when he discussed who the brightest math student was. After that he had to wear a nose tip of silver.

I should not be bothered. Violence is not a good quality in mathematicians and a nonexistent quality for me. Also, I don't argue with people about whether I'm a better mathematician... It doesn't feel right. And most people I know either knowingly suck at math (and would be quick to agree I'm better than them) or are my math teachers (and their M.A.'s or Ph.D.'s make me fear them without need for argument).

Besides, Tycho lived in the 16th century. He didn't even know calculus. What good is math without calculus? :)

[/quote]It is when the amount of addends is infinite (this is what I'm learning now in math class). But that relies very heavily on calculus, so there you go.
