I think we need a test. To register for a forum, they should have to answer at least 3 out of 4 questions right, and the questions should be randomly chosen from a pool of 20 or 30. Topics should include knowledge of the clan, mainly, but also a little about programming or general knowledge :)

Good point. Different questions for each board!

Don't forget, people can READ the forum with no account. But to post, they would have to take the quiz.

That would cut down on people who wander in here cluelessly; make them at least look at the main site first :)

Granted, this would discourage new people on the boards, but the last thing we need is more lazy people :)

This should be a mandatory question on every quiz:

1. What are these symbols and how are they used? . , ?

The webbot request forum presently requires registration, and I rather suspect that people would just revert to coming by channel for registration if they got locked out of the request forum by inability to pass the proposed test.

Maybe the WebBot forum should have only one question: "How are you supposed to register?"

Not exactly. It's exclusionary filtering based on ignorance. But discrimination is against a characteristic which is innate and/or cannot be modified, such as ethniticity or gender.

People can fix their ignorance and try again.

In that case, you would be wrong. Look up 'ignorance' in a dictionary.

A good question is....

what is the answer if you...

1) 2*2...
2)square root the previous answer...
3) add it by 123.5...
4) and raising it the 0 power equals...

Everyone should know that from Algebra 1 :P

and for the movie review board ask...

1) What is your name?
2) What is your quest?
3) What... is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

everyone should know that as well :P

I don't agree that most people that come here ignorant, fix their ignorance. IMO, from my first post I have become a bit smarter (I would be labeled as ignorant by me.) But a lot of people do not correct their ignorance at all. Anyway, that's just my opinion and my opinion doesn't matter.

I was thinking more along the lines of:
How do you get approved for membership?
Who leads this clan?
etc.

And about webbots - why do we need a forum for it? It would make 1000x more sense to have a web form for it that people can fill out and submit, and it would also solve the problem of haivng to delete massive numbers of posts, etc.

That would take like 10 minutes, and I'd have no problem with doing it.

I suppose we could either have it write a file, or email requests directly to him. Either way, response to them should be via their email. And once we have their email, we can spam them with vL advertisements and make lots of money off sponsership!

Sounds good. Get to work. :) Remember to take at least basic precautions against mass-requests made with the purpose of consuming disk space.

Not today, but perhaps tomorrow :)

I figure we can do 1 request/ip, that would solve most of the problems :)
I wonder if it would be advantagous to build something right into the bot which will automatically send the request? Like Options->Register Account or something like that.

If you're going to do it (I don't see why you would want to considering the forum is working out very well), make sure people can type in their own comment + registration request; don't have it send me mail -- it's much more convenient to check the forum for new registrations than it is to log in to my e-mail; if you're going to restrict the same person from posting twice, then allow them to edit their request in case they made a mistake; allow me to reply to their request through the same form, I don't want to be logging in to my e-mail and sending them a message; allow them to reply to my registration confirmation so they can say their "thank you's" and "good work's."

Enjoy.

There is a hack/feature in the forum that allows you to not see images in signatures. Go to your profile, there is a checkbox "Hide images in signatures?" under "Hide E-Mail from public?" under Preferences. I enabled this a while ago, and it's great.
