My tv production teacher wants to network 6 computers together so that they can transfer vdeo files and also get rid of the school emposed restrictions. All systems are running Windows 2000 Professional.

The school network setup:
Every student has an account, all very restricted in terms of access to the system, no run command, no command prompt.. nothing.

What the teacher wants:
Get rid of restrictions, (will they still have internet connectivity?) share files between 6 computers inside this room. Also he wants the file transfers between the 6 systems to be as fast as possible.

The restrictions and the networking are somewhat separate. If you purchase six new computers, you'll likely get six unrestricted computers. You could then set up a small workgroup without any lan-style connection to the school network, just IP addresses for internet access. Login names for the win2k machines would be entirely local to them.

You could also join them into the school's presumable domain and have the domain admin set up policies in active directory to give less restricted access for those computers.

To make the transfers fast, just get a fast network - switched 100mbps or gigabit ethernet depending on your demands.

Hmm, reformatting would work just as well as getting new computers in terms of getting rid of restrictions right?

Whoever put the restrictions on the computers should be able to take them off easily, without the trouble of reformatting.

Why is that not an option? Is your teacher going against his employer and getting himself fired?

{
system("net send (user) spam!")
}

99.9% of people have the messenger service disabled, though.

The messenger service is useful in larger networks. You can for example get a message when your print job has finished spooling.

That's true, if you disallow external computers to send those messages it's not so bad :)

Exactly. Now if we could just identify the same group of "external" people for e-mail...
