So I was reading the recent threads and found it pretty interesting some of the jobs the members of this forum occupy. There was always some intense talent from the members of this community, so with that I'd like to hear what everyone does now-a-days!

Last January I started as a senior developer at Terralever, an interactive marketing agency.  We work primarily on Microsoft-based technologies, although some of our projects run in PHP.

As a developer at Terralever, I've had a pretty good variety of projects come through the pipe: I worked on Red Bull's event sites, as a consultant for a company becoming PCI compliant, Facebook apps, a mobile device, and a WPF kiosk that drives an industrial laser and robotics.

A few months ago I was promoted to development manager, and have been working on growing my personal empire (as well as improving the quality of work coming out of my team).  I probably do about 60% development and 40% management now.

I work at Fry's Marketplace.. It sucks.

Can't wait until I start College.. Still going to give me a job opp, Mynd? :P.

I work in telemarketing 67 hours a week (past 2 months I've been doing these hours to get things paid off soon). It's 2 different jobs. One of them is for ThermoSpas hot tub company (commission based on my part plus hourly pay). Although I hate telemarketing, I've been doing it for 2 years now.

On my own, cleaning computers of viruses/adware/malware, etc.  Also hardware upgrades, full OS reinstalls, tightened up before giving it back to customer so they don't get it in trouble as fast.  Currently work exclusively with Windows systems.

Same as Grok, except I also build custom computers, set up servers (HTTP, FTP, and Voice [mostly for Medical Transcription]), plus freelance software development, of course.

Hell ya it's a hard job. Right now I'm taking in quite a lot of money per month so it's worth it, but I plan to hopefully become fully self-employed early 2009 and develop apps for Apple's AppStore.

I have almost no money, but I spend almost no money. People do pay a lot for standard PC repair, though. You can get away with charging $50-$100 just to make a house call, even if you don't fix the problem.

I'm a college student for the next 4-5 years. 8)

My job is similar to Iago's. I am an IT Security analyst for TD Bank Financial Group here in Toronto, at least probably one of the most sound banks right now. Specifically, I conduct threat compliance and vulnerability management for the banks global assets. That includes Desktops, internal and external servers and devices, all together adds to 120,000 devices world wide. It gets stressful sometimes. I'd say the hardest part of my job is dealing with Banknorth and Comerce employees and getting them to patch there systems. We recently purchased Banknorth, Comerce and Ameritrade. Not sure if anyone here from the states has seen the, "TD Bank, America's most convient bank" comercials/ads.

I just graduated and consider myself lucky to be able to step into a roll such as this. I'm also interested in networking and was employed by my college as a IT Infrastructure specialist for a co-op. I've also applied for Cisco's ASE program, which I will hopefully hear back from in the next coming weeks.

Right now, I'm just trying to build on my career, I want to eventually work my way up into management. I co-own part of a company that me and a college friend started up, SparkITS.ca. Feel free to buy our Managed Snort box setup! :D

CiscoASA is an awesome piece of equipment, performs much better than the PIX, although I haven't really touched much of the ASA's features yet. Still need to get it running in Dynamips.

I just had the Cisco ASE assessment this past thursday. It was pretty intense with the Technical Assessment and the personal itnerview went a little better. Hopefully I did well, it was tough getting to that point since it was the third interview and they narrowed down 4000+ applicants to just 24, with 10 positions available. I'd be working near Raleigh in NC at Research Triangle Park.

I'm kind of interested what you think of the whole ASE program K, and where did you work out of, San jose?

I work in Boulder, CO, which is one of the smaller remote sites.  I don't really know anything about the ASE program -- I believe that might just be for customer-facing positions like TAC and such.  Anyway, I didn't have to go through it :)

I haven't been to the RTP campus but I have heard they have a pretty sweet setup.

Yea I'm also a college student for 2 or 3 more years. As a side job right now I'm working at the activity center on campus. Its a really easy job so I can do some schoolwork while working and pay is decent. After next semester I'm planning on doing a summer internship with either Intel or Raytheon.

I have one more semester left in college before I graduate; and after that its all military training for about a year, since I'm commissioning as a 2LT in the Army as a Military Intelligence officer.  After that training is done I'll be in the NJ National Guard in Westfield as the assistant S2.  On the civilian side of things, I still have no idea what I should do with my Criminal Justice degree; and being a cop isn't my first choice.

Yeah, I believe there's either the ASE, which is more customer facing, or you can apply for SE1 and work your way upto 4 then management etc... I'm just interested in the certifications and the Cisco brand on my resume.

Most likely Austin, TX for Intel or Dallas for Raytheon.

Yea. Raytheon is huge, here. They give out internships like candy. (A good thing) Most of the students I see in my computer science courses from year to year work there. A lot of them work on 'secret' things, too.

Ha that's what I've heard also. I read an article in the newspaper once that included a survey done by Raytheon's CEO and it turns out that 90% of Raytheon's current employees graduated from UT Dallas, where I'm going. So I think that helps a lot.

I'm currently in school working either towards an Urban & City Planning or Civil Engineering (specialized in transportation), I haven't decided yet. I also do transit advocacy with a group called the transit coalition here in Los Angeles, we go to meetings with politicians and work towards the big picture. For money I do IT work for my girlfriends step-dad.

Eventually I'd like to run a large transit system :)

Hmm... How do you telemarket donations?  Unless, they are donations you have to pay for...

I call and pitch people (mostly cold calling) to give money for police. They can donate by mail or by phone. It supports families of police who are killed, pays for events through Connecticut (where I live), and stuff like that. Most places have a fund raising company call for them and thus don't receive almost any of the funds. In my case, which is a rare case, there is a board of current and retired police offers who actually control 100% of the finances. So more money goes toward the charity aspect, but I'm not sure how much goes. We have to pay employees, salaries to board members, and bills. The town I got pulled over in is the town this police organization is located in, and all officers in this town are members of it, so they all know all about it. I would get out of almost any ticket (with the exception of extreme cases such as DUI) because I collect money that indirectly goes into the pocket of the officer who pulls me over.

In a way, you have a nice advantage working as a police telemarketer.  However, in general I don't like talking on the phone so it wouldn't justify for me, lol.

I don't see how you can't find a job within two years. You found one in under a month. I check CareerBuilder and other sites and I still see a number of places hiring, it's just jobs that people don't want, but they don't like that job so they claim there are no jobs. I'd love to have a contact for a recruiter. Just keep in mind that at this point I have little on-paper technical experience: no money to take any certification tests means I don't have any of them. My previous job in the field went out of business (and having had no online presence, it's hard to prove who they were; kind've ironic that a software development start-up had no online presence, no? Might be one of the reasons why they went out of business lol), so they can't be reached for a point of reference either unfortunately. After that, my only references are about 3+ years out of date. :(

[/quote]See, that's what happened to me. I didn't like the idea of being a janitor. But I needed the money and I didn't have any other prospects.

Although to be honest, even though I do feel it is a waste of talent (just about anyone can do it tbh), I do feel it to be a rewarding job. In additional to cleaning stuff, my duties also include giving out rental skates, sharpening said rental skates, and soon I'll be driving the ice resurfacer as well. A lot of these rental skates are dull as fuck, and it's pretty rewarding to see the difference on someone's face when they get a sharp skate after having been on a dull skate for a while. They can actually skate instead of just sliding and falling everywhere.

And even though it's not my favorite job, I do still give it my all. I get ridiculed frequently for how I look or act by coworkers, but I don't care. I just do my job and do it well, and my boss seems to think I'm the greatest. He's looking to promote me to supervisor soonish which is pretty cool, considering there's a half dozen others whom have been hired for longer than I.

8/hr under the table, just got my hours cut down to 20 a week because my boss is a retarded scrub.  >:(
