I wasn't sure where to post this, but when I attempt to access this forum from school it is blocked by the transparent proxy for Pornography. I can access valhallalegends.com fine, but not the forum.. is there something in the keywords that it is catching?  :(

What proxy? Or is it a private school blacklist?

I find it highly amusing. :) I guess your school just can't stand how sexy Grok is, or something.

Probably has something to do with the, "How many vaginas have you seen?" thread in the Fun Forum.

Those filters are downloaded automatically from companies that track sites that have pornography warez, hacker tools, and what happens is programming sites get included in it as well.  There are countless legitimate programming tools sites that are on those lists.  From where I work, I have to use the internet without the proxy or I cannot get to tools I sometimes need for the job.

The sites probably get on the list by keyword searches and sufficient hits.  Since forum.vahallalegends.com likely has a thousand hits on programming subjects, I am not surprised it makes those lists.

The cheaper lists only work via keywords and humans do not doublecheck the list.  You'll find cheaper lists used by schools and most smaller companies.  Larger companies can afford the expensive lists, which have sites reviewed by persons so that legitimate sites do not make the restricted list.

What's odd is at my school (I beleive Novell is in use still) forum.valhallalegends.com is permitted but lacrosseforums.com is not. The lacrosse forum is much more tightly moderated and even a thread about torrents was closed, so it's interesting to me.

Last I heard about the Las Cruces Public Schools they blocked all sites & prior to visiting the computer lab you had to submit a list of sites you would like to visit then the approved ones would be unblocked.

I don't think that would work out very well if they ever actually did implement it, how do you do a reasearch paper already knowingly what sites you want to look at?

That's the only "good" solution to content filtering: whitelisting.  They could block all sites, then unblock all sites that are "safe".  They could provide their own search engine which only searches within "safe" sites.  That would be a lot of work, but it's the only way to stop people from getting around filters.

my school used some shitty software. It blocked tons of useful sites like maddox.xmission.com but we are able to quickly get around it by just packeting the crap out of any blocked server, it would overwhelm the proxy and we could then access the site like there was no block in place until the proxy was reset. But then they upgraded their stuff and the only way to get at the content I wanted was by SSH.

Did you try Google's cache?  That's how I check maddox's site from work where it's blocked under the content category "tasteless."

Interesting. Now, every blocked site just doesnt load.. I try to go to like poopreport.com and MSN will come up saying
We couldnt find 'www.poopreport.com' please try blah blah'
. If I try to come here, it just doesnt load (I get the error screen, the usual IE one [I think it was  a timeout, I didnt read it]). Also, tried the google thing, I got to google translate fine, but the page just timed out.. very strange  :-\ Also, the admin caught us fucking around with cmd today lol, I put a .bat file on this kids computer which worked something like..
(test.bat)
:a
start http://www.yahoo.com/
start z:\test.bat
goto b
:b
start http://www.google.com/
start z:\test.bat
goto a
Unfortunately, he walked by as the cmd screens were spawning like hell, so I don't think he likes me anymore  ;D Thanks for attempting to help guys  :)

At least your school's firewall doesn't have www.wikipedia.org blocked as "tasteless".

You might try using en.wikipedia.org. If it isn't smart, it might let you use it.

Oh well, I guess theres no way around the Sentian pos. I tried the google idea, it caught it as P2P/Loophole, same with all cgi proxies. Damn my school!  :)

Try making your own domain that points to vL.  Register a .no-ip.com domain and tell it the same ip address as vL.  I don't think it will work well, since this forum software doesn't like different DNSes, but who knows?

I thought that for the easiest installation, it was all relative to index.php, so it wouldn't matter?
