hismajesty | I joined this game yesterday for something else, and then figured that it'd be fun if I did it with people I actually know so I made a new game on the site for the forum. Basically it's just playing the stock market using fake money, and see who can come out on top. You'll start with $100,000 and I have it set do do either USD or CAD seeing as how we have a lot of Canadians here. Anyone is welcome to join, and of course the market opens tommorow at 9:30 AM EST so that's when we'll start. I'm not sure how much of a following this will get, but I like the stock market and my grandpa is really into it so we talk about it a lot. http://simulator.investopedia.com/Join.aspx?G=15912 | July 10, 2005, 4:49 PM |
CrAz3D | "The current time is 1:51:49 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST). The market re-opens at 9:30 AM EST, which is 20 hours and 38 minutes away." SO LONG AWAY! I don't know that I'll play for a week or so (I'm gone) | July 10, 2005, 5:52 PM |
Mangix | i did something similar in school with the other groups in my class. it sucked but at least my team won :P. | July 11, 2005, 3:56 PM |
R.a.B.B.i.T | I did this in like....4th grade. | July 11, 2005, 4:20 PM |
CrAz3D | I did it in 6th grade, 8th grade, & my econ class in highschool. We ever finished it in 6th grade or my econ class (we didn't do much about econ in that class:(). I did quite well in 8th grade | July 11, 2005, 4:42 PM |
Arta | I registered and bought 200 shares in Microsoft. It's the only symbol I know :) I'll play some more tomorrow. | July 11, 2005, 5:37 PM |
hismajesty | haha. I use http://finance.yahoo.com when I don't know a symbol. | July 11, 2005, 5:58 PM |
Hitmen | I bought a share of SCO just for fun | July 11, 2005, 8:26 PM |
hismajesty | Brooks Automation (BRKS) was pretty good to me today, I gained $1925 off of them between the vL and Investopedia game. I'd recommend buying this as they're buying Helix Technology. This puts the odds in our favor for getting a good payout as after Brooks aquires them we will also own 61% of Helix, so we'll be getting profits from both. | July 11, 2005, 9:01 PM |
R.a.B.B.i.T | BKRS Change: Down 0.28 (1.80%) | July 12, 2005, 2:05 AM |
hismajesty | Yes, but it went up from what I originally payed. This is more of a long term stock for me, I'm waiting for the acquisition, so I'll deal with it even if I do lose some money at first. My grandfather said I should treat it like real money so I actually learn before I invest big time with real money, so that's how I'm going to handle it. | July 12, 2005, 3:01 AM |
R.a.B.B.i.T | HELX was up 2.80 yesterday, and I bought both, but neither are showing up :'( | July 12, 2005, 9:27 PM |
hismajesty | It takes 20 minutes on the site. If you bought at the same time you posted then you won't actually own it until tommorow because the market is closed. I'm playing two games, the vL one and the main one that you're automatically put into. I'm not doing as well as I'd like. ASEI is pwning me on one of my accounts. I got a tip from an article to expect growth, and I had made about $320 as of about 3:45 PM, I'm not sure what happened. iBasis Inc. is a very interesting penny stock that I'm watching. Usually it's best to stay clear of penny stops, but after some news yesterday they could very well end up being the largest VoIP network in the world. vL Portfolio: Account Value - $100,570.05
Stock Portfolio Market Symbol Description Quantity Book Value Market Value Total Value % Change Gain / Loss Sell USD ASEI AMERICAN SCIENCE & ENGR 500 $47.65 $45.21 $22,605.00 -5.12% -$1,220.00 Sell USD IMAX IMAX CORP 1000 $9.98 $9.81 $9,810.00 -1.70% -$170.00 Sell USD AAPL APPLE COMPUTER INC 500 $38.01 $38.24 $19,120.00 0.61% $115.00 Sell USD BRKS BROOKS AUTOMATION INC 1500 $14.54 $15.41 $23,115.00 5.98% $1,305.00 Sell USD IBAS IBASIS INCORPORATED 2000 $2.94 $3.26 $6,520.00 10.88% $640.00
Suggestions welcome. You should all also watch "Mad Money" it's a stock show hosted by Jim Cramer on CNBC Monday-Friday at 6PM EST. I forgot about it today so I'll catch the rerun at 9. I watch it a couple times a week, it's really informative and at the same time ammusing. He yells and argues and gets all worked up and stuff. It's great. | July 12, 2005, 10:29 PM |
R.a.B.B.i.T | I bought it July 11, still nothing. | July 13, 2005, 4:14 AM |
hismajesty | Maybe try again? :o | July 13, 2005, 2:04 PM |
hismajesty |
The ratio for near-term options as of Thursday showed 344,000 call contracts compared to 238,000 put contracts, according to data provided by Schaffers Investment Research. Just four months ago, there were more puts than calls on the options. Call options show investor appetite to buy the stock, while a put indicates a willingness to sell. If google does well stock will see 325+ next week, however and hint of negative news in the earnings and GOOG could be back below 265 a share. One thing GOOGLE does NOT DO is announce its outlook for the next earnings report.
This is a bit risky, but I'm going to buy it. I really wish my family (like I told them to) had bought google when it went public for $82/share, even $266/share would be a really good earnings. Oh well. Edit: Or not, damn Investopedia diversification rule. :( | July 14, 2005, 11:01 PM |
hismajesty | Hitmen is winning now, I'm in second, and then Darkness in third. -- I was talking to my dad and he said that he'd give me $1000 to invest in this VoIP company I like. He said that he'd like for me to find an IPO (meaning, a company that is about to go public...initial public offering.) Then I could do like people did with Google, buy it for cheap and watch it grow then make a small fortune. Then, a few minutes later, I came down stairs with information on this oil surveying company that is about to go public for $11-13 a share. Jim Cramer is saying that technology, oil, and real-estate are the best things right now. My dad said that he'll set me up with $10,000 instead, but of course it will be in his name since I'm not 18. My mom told me to stay up stairs since every time I come down he's increasing the amount. I asked if I could use some money from my trust fund to help pay for it (as my grandpa said you should never invest less than $5k if you plan to make a profit) but they said no, so I might use my 'car/spending' account to help some maybe. Anyway, what is everyones opinion on this? I'm looking at Superior Well Services. I'm not too informed on how oil mining works and such, but apparently these people are surveyors and they handle stimulation or something. I'm also looking at maybe Bronco Drilling Company. I'm going to look into a few other IPOs too, does anyone have any suggestions? | July 15, 2005, 11:29 PM |
hismajesty | Baidu (Chinese equivilant of Google) announced it's plan to go public a few days ago. This is something to watch, it has the potential to boom as much as Google has in the past year. | July 16, 2005, 7:07 PM |
Arta | hmm, looks like I was playing in the wrong game. How do you get to the rankings? | July 17, 2005, 5:40 PM |
hismajesty | Ah, was wondering why you still had 100,000 and no buys. At the bottom of the portofolio page there's a link to go to the rankings. | July 17, 2005, 6:58 PM |
hismajesty | All of you Google investors just got OWNED. Down over $12 after-hours (was up $10 and some change at market close, 35 minutes later it lost it all). Yahoo pwned it. Edit: You all probably still are in postive numbers with GOOG though considering WHEN you bought it, but it certainly didn't get the boost that was expected. (up over $365) You might bounce back, or dip further, after Google relases it's earnings. | July 19, 2005, 8:37 PM |
CrAz3D | google has got me$1.2k I think, good enough for now...too bad it ain't more & real | July 20, 2005, 6:00 PM |
hismajesty | GOOG and MSFT release their figures tommorow. This could be very interesting. | July 20, 2005, 9:45 PM |
