Deception
Nobody ever helped ChRoNiC with this issue on this thread: https://davnit.net/bnet/vL/phpbbs/index.php?topic=5301.15

So I am re-opening it because I too am having a problem.

When I download Icons-WAR3.BNI and open it with an MPQ Editor, I get nothing but files with the extention: XXX

Now how do I know what file types these icons are in? They aren't PCX like Starcraft icons. They aren't GIF, BMP or JPG. What are they?

For reference, here is what I see when I open Icons-WAR3.BNI:

I'm sure someone on here has extracted the icons.

Quarantine
If I read you correctly, they are TGA

MPQ files don't contain file names, only filename checksums.  Generally, the names are discovered through bruteforcing, however they can also sometimes be found through the MPQ's (listfile) or through strings within other Blizzard files.

I'm almost positive that I've seen a list file containing all of the filenames found in icons-WAR3.bni, but I don't rememeber where it's at.

If you can find it I would be very glad.

(listfile) ?

If you had a TGA image viewer, it wouldn't be hard to figure out what they were if you just extracted them and displayed them.

At first I thought they were TGA until I tried opening them as such in PhootoShop. Then I thought they were TGA with a header for flags/product and such. However, LoRd discovered that they are actually BLP files.

BLP.. hmm..

MPQ's generally include a file called "(listfile)" which is a text document that contains the names of the files within the MPQ, however the list is oftentimes empty or incomplete.

UserLoser.
icons-war3.bni is much different than other bni files.  It contains a plaintext file which is for the icon product, flags, icon (in statstring), etc., where as other .BNI files have it as part of a "structure" or "header".  I do recall the icons are .BLP format, but I also recall the "regular" (peon, grunt, ghoul, archer, etc.) icons *not* being in that file, only special icons like KBK, WCG, and IIRC: extra unused 5th and 6th tier icons for night elf/human

That makes sense; those images could easily be within the main War3 MPQ files, although WC3 would be unable to display TFT icons without a patch/additional file.
