hismajesty | Wow, mine sucks. The one on a wireless connection only gets service like 1/4 of the time, and I've got a ton of computers in my attic but I've taken them apart/broken parts/etc.) All but one worked when I got them, too. Heh..I suck. :( | April 5, 2005, 8:59 PM |

tA-Kane | It's quite a large home network, in my opinion, consisting of 6 hubs/routers for 7 machines and 1 printer. This doesn't show the computers which are *not* on the network, which are three more IBM RS/6000 running AIX 4, another Mac OS 8.6 machine, and a couple of old 286s. I have a block of 8 IP addresses (5 usable). 2 are being used downstairs... one points to the Mac router (NetGear 8-Port), and the other holds my dad's computer... he has his own IP address for VPN and stuff. What you might think is the wierdest thing is how I've got it set up in my room. Since the only wireless router we have is my D-Link, and my mom can only connect via a wireless (her computer is off in her own little space, which would have been quite awkward to simply drop an ethernet line there...), I have to connect her to that. Since I'm also running Windows, I consider myself as requiring to be behind NAT (puts a little more effort on finding me, does it not?). But, I've had trouble when running NAT and trying to access myself via the public IP's domain name when using the D-Link, so I use the Linksys. I've put the Mac server over on the D-Link on the LAN side with the internet coming in on the LAN side as well. The D-Link's internet port plugs into the Linksys's LAN port, so that mom can access the internet. Without it, D-Link would go "wtf she's on the LAN but there can't be internet access on the LAN side so she can't get out because D-Link is stupid!". Kinda crazy, but it works. | April 6, 2005, 5:55 AM |

peofeoknight | Why the heck are your networks so damn complicated. You guys are daisy chaining all of this stuff but you are not even using all of the ports on the root router. | April 7, 2005, 1:43 AM |
tA-Kane | Yeah... but there's a reason for me. The DSL modem is in the storage room... it splits off and goes to my room (where the servers are located, as wel as my computer), as well as goes downstairs. From my room, it goes from one hub to another hub so that one server and my computer is behind NAT while the other isn't. Downstairs, it goes to a hub where it splits off into two parts of the room -- we figured it'd be a crapload easier to have several hubs instead of dropping 500 feet of ethernet line just so everyone can use one hub.

Since I'm also running Windows, I consider myself as requiring to be behind NAT
Isn't there an awful lot of NAT in your network? In most cases, I'd go for setting up NAT at the border between Internet and LAN, not having 3 different NAT:ed subsections on the LAN..
I would be totally into that... perhaps you'd mind sharing some thought? 1) I have a block of 8 static IPs (5 usable). 2) IP#1 is dedicated for the Mac server 3) IP#2 is dedicated for the NetBSD server 4) IP#3 is dedicated for dad's VPN 5) IP#4 is used for the Macs The biggest reason my mom and I are piggy backing off of the NetBSD IP (via NAT) is because I don't have another router to use the fifth usable IP. I think a lot of this could be solved a lot easier if I had two main routers (an 8-port for my room, since I plan on eventually bringing the other three RS/6000 machines on the network somehow, and a second 8 port for downstairs), but they would have to support having multiple public IPs, since three of the IPs are already dedicated for specific uses. The fewest NAT sections I could have without using a crapload of wire would be two, since the first NAT is in my room (upstairs), and the second is pretty much on the opposite end of the house (and downstairs). | April 7, 2005, 2:05 AM |
peofeoknight | That is why we went wireless... we did not feel like stringing up cable to go to the other side of the house (diagonally). My mom got a laptop after we went wireless. | April 7, 2005, 2:12 AM |
tA-Kane | I've not had very good results with any form of wireless. I don't know if it's the range or the layout of the house or what, but it doesn't work well for my setup. My mom is the only one that still uses it, and she still gets drops every few hours or so. Besides, I would take wired over wireless anyday, just for the added security. | April 7, 2005, 2:19 AM |
hismajesty | My moms computer is connected wirelessly to the router in my room, and she gets drops every few minutes that last anywhere from seconds to days. Cox said the router should not be above the other computer, but it's really not feasible to move it. | April 7, 2005, 2:22 AM |

There's no way I'm drilling a hole in the ground. :P | April 7, 2005, 2:31 AM |
peofeoknight | All you gotta do is put in a jack. I mean just score a nice little hold (does not even have to be a full rectangle) and maybe get out the dremmil and then cut it out. Then take a pin and poke it through your floor and if you can see where it comes out downstairs... hopefulyl by the wall where the router is or something conveiniant like that. Then just drill another damn hole down there and drop the cable down through the wall and pull it out at the bottom. Then put nice little covers over the holes and you are done. Of course you probably will have complications, like your room probably is not right over the router or something like this. You might have to run cat5 into the attic and then down into the house. This can be a pain in the ass but it can lok nice and professional... it will just take a few hours to do. But this is why God invented the wireless router. But all that being said, this doe snot explain why your network has to be so damn complicated. Just have it like mine, get one router that has ports and is wireless and then put all the pcs on it, why can't one do that? | April 7, 2005, 2:54 AM |
The only time our wireless goes out is if something happens and it unplugs from the main router, or if I drop it or something(because it used to sit right next to me) but when it did go out it would be out for several hours at a time. | April 7, 2005, 3:52 AM |
